FINJEM (Finnish job-exposure matrix) – occupational exposure agent matrix 1945–2015

FINJEM

Download data
The FINJEM matrix is often used in register studies as a method for estimating the levels of exposure. It also makes it possible to identify high, harmful exposure in various professional groups, which supports the targeting of control measures. FINJEM data is also used in monitoring the working conditions of Finland and risk assessment and as an exposure database. FINJEM data is professional group-specific and it cannot be used for assessing the exposure of an individual employee or company.

Description

The Finnish job-exposure matrix (FINJEM) is an exposure database developed by experts of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health over several decades.

The information is based on data collected by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, which are used by many experts of the Institute when estimating levels of exposure. The matrix includes professional group-specific estimates about the prevalence of exposure and exposure levels. The matrix also uses annual information about the numbers of employees provided by Statistics Finland as baseline information to calculate estimates about the number of exposed persons and the related exposure agents and levels.

What the indicators describe

The indicators can be filtered according to exposure agent group (chemical or physical), occupation or a specific exposure agent. Estimates for periods of various durations between 1945–2015 are included in the matrix. Exposure estimates for 50 chemical and 10 physical exposure agents are available. Not all exposure agents have an estimate for each period of time.

The indicators provide information about the occupations that most commonly involve exposure agents, the exposure agents for the selected period of time and the total number of exposed persons. The indicators also display the breakdown of exposed persons per each exposure level. The exposure level breakdown is not included if an occupational hygiene limit value, indicative limit value or other similar reference value to which the exposure levels can be compared is not available for the exposure agent. The Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) value includes occupational hygiene limit values, indicative limit values and other reference values.

The classification of occupations is the 1980 classification based on a census by Statistics Finland, which is compliant with the international ISCO-58 classification of occupations. The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health developed a specific FINJEM exposure matrix based on the Statistics Finland Classification of Occupations 2001 for 1995–2009 (FISCO88-FINJEM). Matrices suitable for research are available on demand (contact information can be found below).
